| In the fall of 2007, I decided, after many years of singing in choral groups with a totally untrained voice, to take a singing course in the Evening division at Juilliard. Not only was the class a very interesting experience, but I suddenly found I was free to walk the halls of Juilliard and listen to the music coming from behind all the classroom and practice room doors. I must have spent an extra hour each week listening to incredible vocal and instrumental music drifting into that hallway. I had to find a way to contact those players and singers and incorporate their professional needs into my life as a photographer. And so began this website. Over the past year and a half, I have met and photographed many of our finest classical performers, teachers and students. My contact with them and their music has inspired a new, more sophisticated style in my portraiture and has enriched my life immeasurably. My goal with these very talented and disciplined artists is to explore not only their physical features but to capture their inner life: their intensity, their search for meaning and new interpretation, their darker souls and even their lighter humor. I don’t discuss my goals with them in those terms. The portraits simply express part of my own intensity and search for meaning and interpretation. I feel that the pictures on this site succeed, for the most part, in capturing those essential parts of a classical artist’s personality. If you read the testimonials included on the site, I think you will see that the pictures work not just for me but for the artists as well. Thanks for your interest and I hope you enjoy the portfolios. Richard B. |
